| Asphalt Roof Felt: |
Roofing felt permeated with organic (asphalt) compound. The thickness is measured in weight, ie: 15# paper or 30# paper. |
| Tear-off: |
Remove existing roof materials, ex: shingles, paper, drip edge, etc. |
| Drip edge: |
Galvanized or aluminum trim piece terminating the edge of the roof over an eve or gable. |
| Valley Metal: |
Galvanized metal panel installed at point of intersect between two roofs. This intersection forms a valley. |
| Dead Valley: |
A valley on a roof that slopes into a wall or another roof and the natural flow of the water is stopped |
| Ridge Cap: |
Decorative piece of shingle crowning the peak of a roofline. |
| Ridge Vent: |
Aluminum vent installed on peak of roof covering a hole purposely cut in order to allow hot air to flow out of attic space. |
| Kitchen Vent: |
10 inch cover placed over kitchen vent pipe to allow for stove fan or other powered fan to ventilate air out of the house through the roof. |
| Dryer Vent: |
4 or 6” cover placed over a dryer vent pipe to allow for venting of air from clothes dryer or bathroom powered vent fans. |
| Plumbing Boots: |
Come in several different sizes: 5”, 4”, 3”, 2”, and 1 ½”. These are generally lead flashings to go over the pluming pipes that you see coming through your roof. Plumbing vent pipes prevent a vacuum from forming in your drains and allow for the freer flow of water. |
| Electrical Service Boot: |
This is a type of flashing installed around your electrical service point of entry to prevent water intrusion. |
| Flat Roof |
A roof of little to no noticeable pitch. |
| Shingle: |
The visible roof covering that is decorative and protective of the dry-in. Generally, a shingle is fiberglass mat that is permeated with an organic (asphalt) material. It is protected from the sun by granules that are attached to the surface of the shingle. |
| Granule: |
A particulate that protects the organic material within the shingle from the sun. Some granules also protect from fungus. Fungus can stain or darken a shingle. |
| Permit: |
A public record with the county or city of the work that will be done to the home. |
| Inspection: |
The city or county will send an inspector out in order to view the work being done. An inspector will make a decision whether the work meets or does not meet a specific standard set by the city or county. |
| Plywood Replacement: |
Upon tear-off of the existing roof, the crew leader may find that some plywood will need to be replaced due to rot caused from some type of water intrusion. |
| Square or sq.: |
100 square feet of area. Example: 36 sq is 3600 square feet. |
| Roof-over: |
Installing a second layer of shingles over your existing shingle roof. |
