Roofing Terminology

Dry-in: Install asphalt roof felt
Asphalt Roof Felt: Roofing felt permeated with organic (asphalt) compound. The thickness is measured in weight, ie: 15# paper or 30# paper.
Tear-off: Remove existing roof materials, ex: shingles, paper, drip edge, etc.
Drip edge: Galvanized or aluminum trim piece terminating the edge of the roof over an eve or gable.
Valley Metal: Galvanized metal panel installed at point of intersect between two roofs. This intersection forms a valley.
Dead Valley: A valley on a roof that slopes into a wall or another roof and the natural flow of the water is stopped
Ridge Cap: Decorative piece of shingle crowning the peak of a roofline.
Ridge Vent: Aluminum vent installed on peak of roof covering a hole purposely cut in order to allow hot air to flow out of attic space.
Kitchen Vent: 10 inch cover placed over kitchen vent pipe to allow for stove fan or other powered fan to ventilate air out of the house through the roof.
Dryer Vent: 4 or 6” cover placed over a dryer vent pipe to allow for venting of air from clothes dryer or bathroom powered vent fans.
Plumbing Boots: Come in several different sizes: 5”, 4”, 3”, 2”, and 1 ½”. These are generally lead flashings to go over the pluming pipes that you see coming through your roof. Plumbing vent pipes prevent a vacuum from forming in your drains and allow for the freer flow of water.
Electrical Service Boot: This is a type of flashing installed around your electrical service point of entry to prevent water intrusion.
Flat Roof A roof of little to no noticeable pitch.
Shingle: The visible roof covering that is decorative and protective of the dry-in. Generally, a shingle is fiberglass mat that is permeated with an organic (asphalt) material. It is protected from the sun by granules that are attached to the surface of the shingle.
Granule: A particulate that protects the organic material within the shingle from the sun. Some granules also protect from fungus. Fungus can stain or darken a shingle.
Permit: A public record with the county or city of the work that will be done to the home.
Inspection: The city or county will send an inspector out in order to view the work being done. An inspector will make a decision whether the work meets or does not meet a specific standard set by the city or county.
Plywood Replacement: Upon tear-off of the existing roof, the crew leader may find that some plywood will need to be replaced due to rot caused from some type of water intrusion.
Square or sq.: 100 square feet of area. Example: 36 sq is 3600 square feet.
Roof-over: Installing a second layer of shingles over your existing shingle roof.
